  1. Hello all and hope everyone's well. Started a new project that I have had for a couple of years. Got into Class 8 vehicles back in 1975 at a New York State Regional Truck Rodeo. Was totally taken in and have loved these vehicles since then. Have had an AMT KW K123 laying around for a couple of years. Originally I had painted her bright Yellow, with a Brown frame.  Along the way I had successfully glued in the rear suspension misaligned. therefore she sat for the better part of a year before I decided to approach this build again. Got a new suspension and other parts from a friend. removed the old suspension albeit losing some rivets on both sides of the frame in the process. Stripped the cab and frame paint. Added in the new suspension, and primed and repainted the cab. The pictures you see are where I am thus far. This is the first time I did a two tone paint job. I think it came out pretty good. The last picture is what I am patterning my project after. I just need to decide if I am doing 10 holes all around, or 10 holes on the fronts only and spokes on the drive axles. Also single or dual exhaust stacks.

  2. To all good day and hope everyone's well. So with this on my mind my IH Transtar 4300 project starts. The cab is painted in Model Master Daytona Yellow lacquer. The IH 800 engine which I have found out is referred to as the "boat anchor' is painted in Walmart off brand spray paints. The engine is in Fire Red, and the transmission is in Flat Black, both are enamels. The interior is a Khaki and Brown with Brown seats. As you can see by the pictures I still have a bit to go on the engine and will post pics when that is complete along with pics of the cab. After thinking long and hard I have decided on Flat Black for the frame and associated parts. In a previous post I was undecided about the frame color. The inspiration for that decision is from a truck I came across on the internet. That truck is pictured below.

I always loved trucks, when I was a kid my dad owned dump trucks and hauled dirt and gravel,2 old Internationals,Growing up he got me into building model cars and bought me the Diamond Reo truck and loved building it,Continued building until I got my license and got away from building through high school and went to work in the oilfield.Saw lots of nice rigs and eventually became a driver and still doing that deal behind the wheel today. When I got back into building fell immediately back in love with building these big rigs and love the kits that are available..been around them my whole life and now that Im back into modeling I plan on ordering lots more and building,I have seen so many BA builds on here and am so impressed with the quality these guys do on their builds.Im glad to be a part of this community again.

Simple. 1975 I attended a regional carrier Truck Rodeo in Long Island NY (Nassau Coliseum parking lot) with my friend Jimmy. Fell in love with an old CF White Freightliner slim line single drive. From there is was trucks, trucks, trucks. Until I was 18 and then it was girls, girls, girls. Have built all sorts of models over the years, planes, cars, trucks. Still building all types since picking up the hobby again in 2016.

  4. Paul,

Hi hope all is well. Thanks very much for the comments. I like to use black craft acrylics watered down and wiped off. No engine grease has a conscience in real life. Big rigs as opposed to classic or muscle cars rarely look showroom new so I like to make that apparent in my works. Next up after this W900A is my Transtar 4300 day cab. Still hung up on the choice of frame color on that. Choices are now between Red, Navy Blue, Dark Green, or Semi Gloss Black.

We shall see. Also thinking about doing a two tone cab with the darker shade starting at the top of the front fenders and covering the bottom of the cab.

Well primed her over the weekend and laid down the Model Master White lacquer last night. While going to give her a second coat on the hood dopey old me dropped the hood off the stand. Nice scratch marks were the result. Will sand, prime, and re shoot the hood. Paint and I don't mix very well. Live and learn.

If you want to go that route, they are not very hard to make. I've made a couple on some of my builds.

Thank you for the reply. May actually go with the Revell KW W900 Aerodyne "Snap Tite" kit instead. It will go along with my Peterbilt 359 "Snap Tite" I built last October/November. They ain't complex but are fun builds nonetheless. Pic of the 359 is below.

KW W900 Aerodyne (as seen below) just ordered. I start her upon arrival (weather permitting). I'm hoping she comes out as good OR better than my 359 and that's the best model I ever built. There are a lot of inspirations floating around the Web so the possibilities are endless. Only thing I need to get is the visor for the KW. I assume it with have to be resin cast. If anyone has suggestions on where to get visors I'm all ears

  9. Hello all and hope everyone is well. My wife is getting me a new kit for fathers Day and it will be from one of the following all AMT.

    GMC Astro 95

    Autocar A64B

    Mack Cruiseliner

I built all of these 40 something years ago and at almost 58 my mind is a little fuzzy on assembly. So my questions are as follows:

What issues are prevalent? Example hinges don't fit right. Cab sits too high. The exhaust tubing needs attention. The mirrors don't fit correctly without work. Engine has fit issues.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

  10. I have been slowly working on an AMT White Western Star cab for a little bit. Going for that  mid-late 1970's O/O leased to a carrier effect. The cab, hood, and mercury "Hot Box" sleeper are painted in Rustoleum Gloss Meadow Green as seen in the picture. The frame will be painted in a bright yellow. Going with 10 hole wheels on the front, and spoke "wagon wheels" on the rears. As I have been going through the parts and separating them I have discovered I am missing the hood hinges, the brake cylinders for the rear wheels, and the two bottom rails that glue into the sleeper to raise it up off of the frame. Not sure where to find replacements. So if anyone has any ideas I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you.

I agree on the chrome tanks,I've polished my real tanks and never even got close to the chrome look.

    Paul,

Good morning and hope you are well. I have decided to paint the frame and associated parts semi gloss black. Aluminum tanks and stacks. Going to do it as a fleet unit with an owner operator feel to it. Need to acquire the necessary decals. I kind of like the ones from either the AMT Cali Hauler, or the new Autocar reissue. Going to source them probably on Ebay. Thanks again for all your help thus far.

On the Tri Color Transtar's the chassis was generally painted the same color as the lower stripe, but on all the standard trucks  Semi Gloss Black was the basic color but the buyer could option at a few dollars more any color the wanted. You pretty much have a wide range of choices.   Paul

Paul thanks for the information. Since I am not doing stripes I may go semi gloss black. After frame is assembled and primed I will choose the color. Also I think I will dechrome the fuel tanks and paint them aluminum.
