Hello folks

Attached here are a few pics of my attempt at the Duel Peterbilt 281, 1959 , a truck that has been at the back of my mind as a model to make ever since I saw that marvellous movie.

The drawings are lifted from a free download card model from "Paperoom.blog" which i printed onto 8ogsm paper and stuck to thin brass sheet for cutting out. there were many compromises needed between the method for a card model and construction in brass. If I had worked some things out first, some parts would have been easier, some parts harder - swings and roundabouts - but i'm learning.

Brass used was mainly 0.2 and 0.1 mm thick, plus some angle and hollow rectangular tube provided by K & S Chicago IL. To be honest, i feel that to get the best effect, a great deal of car body filler and auto spray paints (as suggested by Paul, CHEVY 41 - thanks again Paul) will be consumed before I can pronounce the model well and truly finished. But as my wife says in moments of despondency " it is a hobby after all"

Some soldering was fairly easy if not very tidy, but other, smaller parts have had to be glued using epoxy resin, due to heat making bits adjacent fall off.

I've been at it on and off for about four months now, but quite pleased withe progress so far. Wheels and tires were hard to find, but eventually I found a chap who does hardwood turned wheels the right diameter, and I only needed to turn them to a narrower section in my own small lathe to give them the period look -still need to finish off the blackening of the "tires"My 4 yr old grandson has his eyes on it already, he's seen the movie ,too, but he'll have to wait  till Grandad drops off the perch before getting his hands on it !

Clean the brass and the solder flux off as well as possible and than a few coats of Dupli Color or other automotive self etching primer.  Most are available in spray cans. BE SURE TO WEAR A MASK when using it as it is bad for your lungs and such when airborne due to the etching acid in it.  Gee, don't be reluctant to show your work, everbody has to start at some level and you may get a few tips but not any ragging on your work. We have a great bunch of people here who are better than that.   Paul

many thanks Paul, Dupli Color used to be a big seller here in the UK,and may still be,  but "other automotive paint brands are available", so I'm off round the local car spares places.

Hi folks,

I'm about to start the final stages of the Brass built Duel Truck, big parts are soldered, smaller stuff has had to be secured with epoxy resin glue..

Can anyone advise on suitable paints or maybe chemicals to give the truck it's totally neglected and hence menacing look.please??

F'rinstance, is there a suitable primer or etch for brass?

I've seen a brand of model paint called Vallejo, which appears to be water soluble, so I'm not keen on that idea,  Revell paints being oil based enamels would be good I s'pose, again there is the question of primer.

Having looked briefly at the Gallery, I'm a bit reluctant o show my efforts, but maybe I'll risk the criticism!🤓

Anyway, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged,

Hi all from the UK, I am interested in models of many types, racing cars, motorcycles, railroad locos live steam models air gun shooting, radio ham, and on and on, trouble is I'm easily diverted, and so many projects are half completed, hope they get done before St Peter calls.

I'm currently working on a 1/33rd model of the "Duel" movie Peterbilt truck, scratch built  in brass, nearly completed construction, I'm about to start to (somehow) simulate rust and weathering on shiny brass. That'll be fun.
